That’s ah Bandit, Look de Bandit

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007 |

Yesterday a girl pissed me off. Here I am walking down sidewalk on my street, minding my own business when she (a twentysomething) comes walking towards me. She’s walking for exercise and is dressed in black spandex with a pink iPod Shuffle dangling around her neck.

As she comes gets nearer, she raises her arm and very loosely places her hand around her Shuffle apparently to protect it from me ripping it off her neck. Me! And no, she wasn’t fiddling with it, she was protecting it. When I saw this I looked her directly in the eye to see if I could glean a little of what she was thinking, but she was lost in her music and never looked at me once.

Well I was a little taken aback. Part of me understands why she did it. Crime in Trinidad is outrageous, and even though it was only 4 in the afternoon, crime can happen at any time. At the same time, me a bandit? I’m on my street in front of my own house and I get profiled like that? The whole thing actually demoralized me more than it made me angry.

But who she feel she is, boy? First of all, I have my own mp3 player thank you very much. Secondly if she was really that worried about her Shuffle being stolen, she probably wouldn’t display it to the world like that. Thirdly, if I wanted to steal an iPod, I’d steal a real iPod, not a crappy Shuffle and it would be black, not pink.

Good Manicou Vs. Bad Manicou

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007 |

Sometimes with news stories like these I am torn between saying the right thing and reverting to my old Trini mentality. I honestly to try to think 1st world, but 3rd world thinking is so familiar and comfortable. Below is proof of the dichotomy.

Story Fact Good Manicou Bad Manicou
A TRINIDADIAN-born United States citizen awoke yesterday to discover his US flag… Before I go any further. Man, the things that go on in this country. You have to put everything on lock down at night to prevent vandals from getting to it. But why de jail this man leaving the people and dem flag flying overnight? I wonder if it had a spotlight on it? We have laws here to protect our flag from people doing foolishness like flying it at night. He look for dat.
The flag was maliciously burnt That is a disgusting act. People should have respect for other people’s flags and their point of views. I do not support flag burning at all. Oh gaaaaaash, they bun the man flag? *Gib* *Gib*. Well that is real jones.
He said he is a proud American and is elated at his decision to move to the US You know everyone has the right to chose their country of residence. Things here in Trinidad are so bad I won’t blame anyone for wanting to leave and adopt a new country. So what de jail you doing back here in this country you were so elated to leave? Proud American my foot. You is still a Trini. No one will ever recognize you as an American. So res’ down de pigskin and shut down the John Deer. Where de jail these people does come out from? Oh you is a proud American. Well good fine, lef we here to wallow in we own faeces.
Harold Jacob said he planted the American flag on Wednesday in celebration of America’s Independence Day. That’s great! People all over the world chose their on nationalities. If an American moved in next to me and proudly displayed a Trini flag on our Independence Day, I think the act will make me a little misty-eyed. But where de jail this man think he livin’? This looking like Brooklyn to he? How many Trini flags he fly before leffin’ we?
He returned to Trinidad for medical treatment three months ago and is expected to return to the US shortly. This man probably worked hard for many years paying taxes that went into roads and hospitals so now he is quite rightly returning for what is his. Oooooh, and the truth shall set you free. Yuh is proud to be an American just till yuh see the estimate for the surgery. When yuh see the dollars Uncle Sam was callin’ for, yuh say nah boy, I eh taking DAT pressha and yuh fly down here busy busy and park up yuhself in POS General for WE to foot the bill. Nice, ah like dat. Nice to know when yuh needed.
Jacob said he telephoned the Cunupia police to lodge a report but no officer showed up to investigate. Blasted police again. How it is in this day and age police does get to pick and choose what calls they will respond to. It aggravates me to no end to read stories like this where police never show up or show up late. But wait nah, not only did yuh flag get bun, the police didn’t show up either? *plays theme song to “Welcome Back Kotter*. Welcome back Palo. While you was drinking Bud Lights with your buddies and musing over your 401k, that is the kinda salt we was sucking all the time. Allyuh so does get chain up when allyuh come back here and think that 999 go sen’ allyuh 2/3 appliance and 3/4 police car. So who cares if people bun yuh flag and the police didn’t send CID to investigate? Wear a cup man, this is Trinidad. If that is all that happen to you by the time you leave consider yourself lucky.
He then telephoned the US Embassy and asked for protection for himself I have nothing good too say about this… Oh lasssss, this keep getting better and better. Yuh call Uncle Sam for the flag burners? Breds, dem eh taking you on, boss. You really call and ask for protection jed? What protection you feel them going and sen’ you? Breds wake up from your American Dream.
He asked for protection for himself because he felt the act was carried out by someone who could have links with terrorists. …or this for that matter. But it’s not for lack of effort. Breds, the Fox News Channel, it not good. Lef it ‘lone. What terrorism? One jokey flag in a field get singe and you want them to send Ethan Hunt? Whups! Listen to me. Ethan Hunt has bigger fish to fry.
He said that the person who burnt his flag disrespected his country, the US. I hope the bastards are caught. This is foolishness. I want to buy them each a drink.

Sullivan Walker is looking for Actors

Monday, June 25th, 2007 |
Sullivan Walker at right

Trinidadian film star Sullivan Walker has been, for the past month, looking for a few aspiring actors from Trinidad and Tobago. On Saturday night C aired a segment about him, but I only caught the tail end of it. So I was happy when the Sunday Guardian did a short piece on him.

Mr. Walker is back in Trinidad and Tobago to screen actors for a number of stage productions he is working on. The productions (four in all) are (1) A Season in Tobago - which will highlight life in Tobago (2)How to Make it in Hollywood with a Trinidadian accent - which will mirror his own voyage from New York to Hollywood, (3) Boy Days, which focuses on growing up in T&T and (4) a play about Caribbean women.

He has stated in the article that he is trying to give back and recognizes that although we have problems here in Trinidad, he hopes he can “inspire people enough to work out these problems.

Mr. Walker who has acted in TV series such as The Cosby Show, Law and Order SVU as well as movies such as The Firm and Get Rich or Die Tryin’, will be here for at least 2 more weeks searching for actors. However, the Guardian article does not say where those auditions will be held. The only venue given was for a place called “Mangoes” on Independence Square, but the time for that audition came and went this past Saturday. Mr. Walker does say that auditions will take place around the country, so I guess we’ll have to keep our ears open.

World’s Dumbest Ideas #37

Friday, May 11th, 2007 |

Hey, you know what I think? We really should transfer this to DVD.

Allyuh, I’m so sorry for not posting at all this week. That was really bad of me, but this week has been too short and stressful. I promise lots of good things in this coming week.

Happy New Year 2007

Monday, January 1st, 2007 |

Happy New Year 2007 to everyone. When I started this thing in June I didn’t know if anyone was going to ever want to read it let alone come back. But thanks to all of you, it’s been a very good 6 months.

So I thanks you all for your comments and e-mails during the past few months and I look forward to hearing from you again throughout this year (even though I am slow when it comes to responding. Lord knows I have at least half a dozen e-mails to reply to). I also look forward to hearing from those of you who read all the time but hardly ever comment. (Who is it from Belfast, Ireland and Charleston SC who’ve read my blog almost from the beginning?)

Anyway, I wish you all a happy and blessed New Year filled with health, wealth and lots of other good stuff.

Abu Bakr Released

Monday, December 4th, 2006 |

News coming out of the Hall of Justice is that the Imam Yasin Abu Bakr has been freed of all charges of conspiracy to murder expelled Jamaat members Salim Rasheed and Zaki Aubaidah. Lead defence attorney Pamela Elder requested and Justice Imbrahim yielded to her request that the case should not proceed. In his judgment, the Judge said that it would be “unsafe” to send the case to the jury citing witness irregularity among other issues….more to come.

World Championship of Performing Arts

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006 |

There was an article in the Sunday Guardian that reported that T&T won a whopping 72 medals at the World Championship of Performing Arts in Hollywood. The medal count consisted of 40 golds, 22 silvers, 10 bronze medals. They also won awards for Best Costuming and Best Parade at the opening ceremony.

In adititon to the medals nationals also were reported to have signed a few lucrative contracts among them singer Adana Roberts who signed with Sony Records.

So congratulation to all the T&T performers who medaled at the competition. I’m not sure if the television media or the Express newspaper carried the story, but it’s something that has gone a little under-reported especially as Trinidad won 40 gold medals. When last did Trinidad & Tobago win 40 golds as anything? I’m going out on a limb here, but I’m guessing “never”. 40 golds, man, 40. It’s gets me thinking though, how many medals were up for grab during the whole thing? However, Trinidad did field the second largest team and also the largest team from the Caribbean, so that may have something to do with the great results. (Also it helps that we have talent oozing from the seams.)

I have to admit though, I’ve never heard of the competition before. However it is only the second time that Trinidad has entered so that may explain why.

Stupidity

Yet another reason why I think stupidity is underdiagnosed.

The Manicou Report

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006 |

So this is my blog which can be here at TheManicouReport.com. It will be about Trinidad and Tobago and all the bacchannal out there in the political arena and otherwise.

Right now it does look a little bland but I will spruce it up a bit hopefully before I move in fully.

Anyway if you are Trini, please keep coming back and tell all your friends.
