I don’t understand something.
Bear with me.
Wasn’t it the same Penn State group that the Government of Trinidad and Tobago hired last year to find a new police commissioner? If I remember correctly, they suggested a man named Stephen Williams who they figure was real bes’, the hardest hard, nothing wasn’t touching he, blah, blah, blah…I might be paraphrasing there. Anyway, they thought Stephen Williams was the best man for the job and say, “Look, allyuh, take he!”. But the Government of Trinidad and Tobago wasn’t taking he and for reasons that are still unknown to us they say, “Nah, we doh want that. We go put ah nex’ man instead”. Now, the Penn State people didn’t say nothing about it not having enough candidates or nothing like that. They just liked Stephen Williams. I think it would be rather safe in assuming that present acting commissioner James Philbert was also screened for the position, yet they did not choose him.
So I trying to understand this thing here, why we hire the same set of people here again to do the same wuk that we find they didn’t do good enough the last time? Now follow me here. If Penn State choose the “wrong man” for the wuk, then it have to be that their selection process is flawed…right? If their selection process was on point they would not have chosen the wrong man. So why hire a group that has less than desirable selection methods? It just doh make sense. But nah! We call them back again to give them more money to do the same wuk that we find they didn’t do good the last time.
I wonder if Stephen Williams was a candidate yet again and he was yet again found to be the best candidate for the job if the Government would again ignore the group’s recommendations.
By the way, Penn State is the only group out there in this kind of business?
I don’t know about anyone else, but I can only come up with one conclusion – that the reasons that Stephen Williams was rejected in the first place have absolutely nothing to do with his ability to perform the duties as the Commissioner of Police. The Government of Trinidad and Tobago found Stephen Williams unpalatable for reasons that they would rather not share with us. If this is the case, then it’s not unthinkable that the Penn State group would be hired again. It’s possible that when it comes to choosing a candidate based on qualifications, they are on top of their game. Too bad they not clued in to the bacchanal.

Hear what nah, I know things real bad and thing. The global economic crisis/meldown (whichever panic-inducing word you would prefer to insert there) have we all feeling a little down. But when the best assistance we as a country can do for Haiti is to match Brangelina’s gift, that REAL embarrassing. Seriously, man.
I know that we probably do give assistance to Haiti all the time eh, I understand that. But now them fellas need it more than ever. Tell me we could do better than $1 million US. Tell me that we can do better than Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
It was left to Jack Warner to point out the inadequacy of the PM’s offer. How could the most devastated region in one of the richest country in the world get 10 times as much as the most devastated region in perhaps the poorest nation on earth? It just doh make sense. It doh make sense how two American film stars can upstage us…and the thing is Haiti is we friend.
Did we give New Orleans $10 million because we could have afforded it more easily back then or did the lavishness of the gift have more to do with currying favour with the United States Government? I don’t know the answer to this but it makes you wonder. Haiti can’t do us any favours, it’s not a member of any of the exclusive clubs we’ve been dying to get into, it probably won’t come into a great deal of wealth…ever. So a $10 million reminder that we were there for them in their hour of need is probably wasted on Haiti.
So Haiti, we sorry eh, but you doh have nothing for we.

Wow, are we living in some kind of New Age, Utopian Trinidadian society where people actually resign when they have done wrong? When did things change from wrong and strong to if I have erred I will resign? That is just way too American for me. Next thing you know politicians will start star telling the truth and who knows where that will lead.
The fact that the integrity commission resigned yesterday really and truly boggles my mind. I mean I used to think the Soca Warriors making it to the World Cup was a pie in the sky, and then Germany happened. Then I used to think that flying cars would predate a black American president, and then we were Obamaed, and now all of a sudden, just like that, there is accountability in Trinbagonian politics? When did this happen and what gave birth to it? What is the world coming to?
My, my, my. Maybe the resignation of the Integrity Commission is not significant politically since I’m not sure they can be considered political, but for the entire board to take such a decisive action is commendable. Of course the decisions they have made which made their resignations necessary were less than noble, to put it lightly, but if such a thing is even possible, they have in a strange way reclaimed their own personal integrity they lost.
Is it possible that Trinidad is getting better? Drivel, I’m tempted to say. I don’t think I’m ready to slip into that warm, fuzzy, comfortable feeling just yet. Saying that we’re improving is tantamount to West Indies fans hailing every off win as a sign that the West Indies have turned the corner. I don’t know if this news is something that will make me gush about the process, but I’m a little more optimistic about the system now. We have to start somewhere I guess. Whether this is a start or a fluke is yet to be seen.
