Carnival Violence

Written on February 7, 2008 – 9:40 am | by Mani |

Carnival was free of major acts of violence - Police Commissioner Trevor Paul.

Oh Trevor, Trevor, Trevor. What can I say for you man? Do your job, but don’t try to fool the people nah. It seems as if you are more concerned with shifting the goalposts and engaging in word games than with doing actual police work.

Mr. Paul would have us believe that the murder of Nicholas Sturge (brother of attorney Wayne Sturge) outside the Queens Park Oval following the Soca Monarch competition was either (a) not a major incident (b) not Carnival related (c) not violent or (d) all of the above.

So a murder and countless stabbings take place and and while Nicholas Sturge’s body is not yet cold, Commissioner Paul jumps up and proclaims, “See? I told you! What did I tell you?”

Granted it’s a tribute to the police that there weren’t more murders and stabbings, but the fact remains that there was at least one murder which the police seem intent on downplaying. I have to wonder then, who exactly are they trying to fool? Surely murder is a major violent act. Additionally how many stabbings does it take before the whole lot of them are considered major?

But the truth is that Way Sturge’s murder was all of the above. And if it weren’t enough that we have to bear with the violence, we are still made to listen to the utterances of a defeated Police Commissioner still going out of his way to convince us that he is relevant.

what you don’t realize is that the man not telling a fib… u see is only things like bombing and mass murder that are Major things… a lil stabbing here and there don’t equal a shooting or getting blown up… or even kidnapped…

if you look at it another way… its in the grammar… Carnival was FREE!, (with respect to) major acts of violence well there were a few stabbings… I don’t know why people they could wine on any woman they feel…

I was and still am disgusted at his response to reporters on the question… i vex i didn’t record the news last night…

oh yeah Mani good to see you back…

Bandwagonist, boy I didn’t ketch nah….my apologies to Trevor Paul. I wish next time he would help us out by pointing out what he thought was major, not so major, a little major, so-so, minor, very minor etc. Boy, you would be surprised to see he said it with a straight face.

But thanks boy, I’m trying to stay on the wagon.

I would say iz psychicness that always have me checking your blog the very day you post (and never in between), but I realise what the common link is…Karel posted and I was inspired to check Manicou (don’t worry I got the feed notification simultaneously). So, this leads me back to you and Karel being the same person… :-D because I am suspicious by nature, and a lover of conspiracy theories, especially if it’s alien-related. Tell me there’s an alien involved!

As for the police and that grand statement, I don’t know what to say. Ignoring the steep and rapid decline of the order of our society will only get us closer to a situation like say, in Guyana, where criminals feel they can wantonly shootup 11 innocents to cause unrest in the country to suit their own nefarious purposes. They’re right next door and there are too many similarities in our societies not to fear that.
Sigh. Even if the statement was for tourism or marketing purposes, what message does it carry to the victims of supposedly non-major crimes? Nobody cares.

Chennette, I don’t know what it is. Do you have spy cameras installed near my workspace? If you notice though, Karel didn’t exactly confirm or deny that we were the same person. Hmmmm. But don’t worry, we’re not….I think.

I know what you mean about the Guyana thing. I (as well as other Trinis I’m sure) use Guyana as a barometer and it’s scary at times to hear the kind of news stories that come out from there.

It’s like we live in two different states, the PNM utopia that Trevor paul and Patrick Manning portrays on a daily basis and the real Trinidad that we currently live in.

i agree with you, one murder is still very important, and glossing over it just is not a good look.. i read the express both carnival monday and tuesday, there seemed to be many petty instances - for example, a man got stabbed for wining up on a female- she stabbed him!

carnival should be a time where we don’t count on anyone being murdered or robbed.
