Warner & Panday to Lead UNC Alliance

Friday, October 5th, 2007

I almost, almost posted last night that the UNC Alliance has chosen Jack Warner as their political leader. Last night C’s late news reported that Jack Warner had been chosen, but it was not an official press release, so I decided to hold back on that post till I heard something definite.

This morning I visit the online Newsday only to see splashed over the front page that Jack Warner and Basdeo Panday have both been chosen to lead the UNC Alliance…that is, until the election is over, which should the UNC be victorious, they will then have another meeting on November 6th where they’ll choose who becomes Prime Minister. Said Panday, “In those circumstances, that is the best time in which to determine who will be the prime minister after the elections is won and we know who is there”.

Folks! Coming to a theater near you on November 6th, “The Basdeo Surprise”. Maybe Warner will also take the opportunity on November 6th to choose his new nickname, Austin “Trojan Horse” Warner.

Is this some kind of joke? I’m more than a little confused here. So what’s the point of choosing a leader now? Why not wait till the elections are over? I have to wonder if this is a ploy to pull the wool over the eyes of the electorate.

From the Newsday:

Panday said his “partnership” with Warner, who will lead the Alliance into the election, will unite the country’s African and Indian voters who have been traditionally divided along racial and political lines.

Before Wendy Decides

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Wendy, before you decide whether or not you want to run for a seat under the PNM, why is it that only the MPs were polled? Did the PNM stand to lose the elections based on the perceived non-performance of MPs Valley, Hinds, and Hart? Why change a good tyre? Then why is it that MPs Valley, Hinds and Hart, who have no dwindling in support from either constituents or party groups, are being spit out just before the elections?

Why didn’t anyone ask us what we thought of Lenny Saith? After all, government minsters affect citizens more directly than, for example, the MP from Point Fortin affects people living in Port of Spain North. So why no Bill Johnson poll on government ministers? No one asked because no one cares.

Why is it that even though things have changed so little with regards to crime, the Minister of National Security STILL HAS A JOB? Why is it that Health Care is in shambles and the Minister of Health can proceed without his job being taken away from him?

Where is the poll on Hazel Manning? Why is it that our Education system is a mess and every year schools fail to open for the simple reason that work begins too late.

Is it because everything is going exactly according to plan?

Is this about control? Does the PNM decide who will run for elections on their platform based on who they think they can control and manipulate? A minister can be changed at the snap of a finger. Cabinets can be shuffled and portfolios can be offered or taken away all before the Prime Minister has breakfast. But it’s those pesky MP’s that give trouble. They can refuse to play along, they can shun the party line and no one can touch them. They can refuse to vote as they are told. They will even attempt to use “conscience” in making their decisions. They will band together with other strong-willed and like-minded MPs and act on what they think is right. They will speak out about smelters, Toruba and the operations over at UTT. They will sit out the rest of their term on the back bench raising hell where hell shouldn’t be raised.

It would stand to reason that a “caring, loving” Government like this one should not be in the market for plasticine, but they are. And many of the candidates going up on a PNM ticket probably won’t believe that they are plasticine, but what they don’t know won’t hurt them.

ZoomInfo says I am Nirad Tewarie

Nirad Tewarie’s Zoominfo Profile

According to this ZoomInfo Web Profile, I am COP spokesman Nirad Tewarie. I noticed this morning I was getting referrals from ZoomInfo, only to find out that this was Nirad Tewarie’s website.

Zoominfo states that their profiles are generated automatically using information from the internet, but that some profiles are submitted by users. I don’t believe that this is Nirad’s work even though I have never met the guy, but I’m thinking that it’s someone’s mischief.

For the record, I am not Nirad.

The Manicou in the Guardian…again

Monday, October 1st, 2007

But a a, allyuh boy get ah mention in the Guardian again. Apparently my site was mentioned in the Monday 24th September edition of the paper in a story titled “Internet Campaigning” (on page 4 mind you). The story was written by Mark Lyndersay who normally writes the Bit Depth column in the Guardian and who also blogs on his own website.

The section about The Manicou Report goes:

But anonymity has its upsides, and there are at least two blogs created by unidentified contributors that are worth following this election season.

The Manicou Report has been around for a bit, and its author claims to be a UWI student airing his opinions. The writing is clear and pointed, unfettered by partisan thinking and disturbingly funny.

I am very humbled by all Mark’s compliments and I appreciate them very much. Did you read the part where he said I was “unfettered by partisan thinking and disturbingly funny”? That’s my favourite part.

Also getting some coverage was “The Secret Diary of Patrick Manning”, by, well, Patrick Manning. I’m happy for him as he’s a much better blogger than I would have guessed. Mark says:

For laugh out loud funny, you must read “The Secret Diary of Patrick Manning,” a hilarious entry in the “fake blog” sweepstakes that is sharply relevant and pleasantly amusing. I’d go so far as to say that even PNM stalwarts will find many entries on this blog entertaining.

The anonymous author strikes a winning balance between cruelly accurate satire and an appreciation of the Trini way in his portrayal of an embattled, slightly eccentric PM recording his thoughts on a “secret” blog.

Of course, Patos would disagree with Mark referring to him as an “anonymous writer” since he’s pretty open about who he is.

I didn’t get to see the story myself as I rarely ever buy newspapers during the week. Only yesterday did I find out out about it when my sister called and asked me if I knew my blog was in the newspaper again. She promised to save the paper for me so I’ll get to see it this weekend.
