Mustapha Abdul-Hamid the Comedian

Written on September 17, 2007 – 11:35 am | by Mani |

Tis man name Mustapha Abdul-Hamid they need to put he on a stage and ah not even joking about that. The man have rel jokes. From today’s Express:

He wasn’t the feature speaker, but Tertiary Education Minister Mustapha Abdul-Hamid did provide the crowd with some good picong at the PNM public meeting at the weekend in Sangre Grande.

He first took a jab at the Congress of the People (COP) theme of “new politics”, saying it had something to do with the “afterlife”. He explained that at the recent COP rally at Woodford Square, Port of Spain, they had converted it into a cemetery as “they parade ah set ah dead people all over the place”.

“When I was watching the TV, I see Selby Wilson. Well he dead since 1989,” he joked.

“And see ah fellar called Michael J Williams. They had to bring a paleontologist to dig him up and put him back together.”

On his list of “dead” COP members he included: Clive Pantin, who was a losing candidate in 1981, 1990 and 1991 and therefore has died three times; Trevor Sudama, who was politically suffocated; and John Humphrey, who is dead, but thinks he is still alive. Abdul-Hamid also made fun of the COP political logo as a “big set of circles”.

“Well you know what? They thief that from Royal Bank. That was Royal Bank old logo. It was blue, they paint it red,” he said, cracking up the audience.

The UNC was not left unscathed.

Abdul-Hamid took a jab at Fyzabad MP Chandresh Sharma. He noted that of those who have benefited from a “great PNM education” he listed Tabaquite MP Adesh Nanan, attorney Anand Ramlogan and Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, but not Sharma.

“Nah nah nah, he eh have no education at all. Education pass he straight. Yuh cyar catch meh deh,” he said.

To borrow a line from Larry the Cable Guy, “I don’t care who you are, that right there is funny!”

Boysie, nah, I ketching kicks of Mustapha, but I have always backed the COP. Come on Boysie, the man said that the COP had to find a paleontologist to dig up Michael J Williams and put him back together. Funny is funny, man! I’ve seen more of Williams’ letters in the papers than he himself in the past 15 years. And how education pass Chandresh Sharma straight? All funny. Either way, I think the person who writes Panday’s “Corpse” speeches gave Mustapha a hand in this one.

Boy I don’t even know if I want to comment on that Lavantille situation. I don’t think I ever hear about a man getting shoot 28 times in Trinidad. A priest is suggesting that that was a hit ordered by the upper echelons of society - me eh know.

I don’t know, Mani. As I said, the thing with Dooks hugging BKT was very very disappointing. I don’t want the enemy to be the perfect of the good, but surely Winston can afford to stay away from these kinds of characters… otherwise he’s just Panday by a different name.

i am all for COP. doesn’t Mustapha Abdul-Hamid have a real job, or he uses the one he has now to practice his comedy? also, i dont think Michael J Williams needs to be dug up, he’s in fine shape and health. Mani i love everything you write, excdept for the MJW comment, but prob because i know him pretty well.

Jill, it eh have no malice in dat. I have nothing against MJW, I think he is a fine individual. But the man is old, and Abdul Hamid, was pointing that out. It’s funny regardless of who the comment was directed at. In addition to that, the barbs Abdul Hamid was throwing are understandable in a way. It’s all just political pecong. I understand why you disagree though.

Afro Chic, well is fus time I ever hear anybody ever say that about he gyul, lol. You could start a fan club.

    Thanks Anon.

To be honest, I doh even like to laugh at the things these fellas say in jest, particularly on a political platform or in parliament.

The nation’s business should never be relegated to the level of kicks talk, ole talk or sht-talk by the men who in charge of running it, especially when they doing a piss-poor job of that management.

Picong is what them fellas use to manipulate and placate the more ignorant of their followers who not interested in (or can’t comprehend) mature discourse.

Kayode, I agree 100% with everything you said and I would also like to add that I think that many calypsonians function in this exact same manner. However, I can’t help but find his comments funny.

I try to listen to the 3 parties every week and they all throw out their picong - no problem. The minister is right to a great extent. To put it another way, they are all “political vagrants” who seem to have found a home in the COP. Word is, they’re even going to send up Selby Wilson for Point Fortin. Now that’s insulting as the last time we’ve seen him down there actively, was in the early 90’s..
