Miss Universe 2007

Written on May 15, 2007 – 7:25 pm | by Mani |

By the way, for those of you Miss Universe addicts who plan on catching a glimpse of the show on the 28th(?), don’t look out for a Miss Trinidad & Tobago. In case you haven’t heard, for the first time in 17 years we won’t be represented at the competition.

Apparently there was no money from either sponsors or from Government so no rep was chosen.

I remember I began watching the Miss World and Miss Universe competitions the year Giselle LaRonde won the title and I made it a point to watch the show every year since then (well maybe up till Miss T&T failed to progress). I watched especially as T&T almost always made it to the final 10. In fact I met so many people in the United States who knew about Trinidad because of our prowess in the beauty pageants.

It will probably be a lesser competition because we weren’t there, but I won’t know for sure because I won’t be watching. It won’t be the same without us.

I must admit that the last time I watched the entire show was 1998, well at least the last part of the broadcast.

Well that’s a bummer. I had no idea. I really enjoyed seeing T & T in the competition. So many more people became aware of our little island because of this. Oh well. There is always next time right! Hopefully the situation improves.

Shameful, I think someone should volunteer…..

I have to say that I’m not too broken up about this. I’ve never found beauty pageants to be a very worthwhile endeavour. I guess you could try to argue that having a Miss Universe gives us pretty good bang for our advertising buck, but frankly, I wouldn’t buy it without some good numbers (remember that most years our rep goes out early, so it’s not like anyone hears anything at all about T&T). Seems like there must be better ways to promote the country. Of course, given that the alternative seems to be pouring more money into another jacuzzi at the PM palace, maybe a beauty contest isn’t such a waste.

Now if private citizens want to sponsor someone, they should go brave. I mean, if this is such a big boost to tourism, why aren’t the local hoteliers and restauratuers ponying up the needed cash?

I think you may be correct ed. If the various successes in Ms Universe brought any tangible benefit I bet businesses would have lined up to sponsor the girls.

We’ve got another beauty queen on our hands. She uses a state-issued credit card to shop her desire for jewellery, extentions, fancy lights and the secrets to having healthy twins. She gets caught and decides to look into the legal remedies against the credit agency for disclosing her purchases. Has a change of heart and decides to apologise for not knowing she could use said card that way. She thinks one day she’ll use her MP status for world peace and shopping sprees to New York!

Ok, so did Robinson-Regis use the cad for personal purchases, but pay the bill herself, or did taxpayers pay for it? I have a corporate card, but I have to pay the bill and get reimbursed by my employer, so if I use it for personal stuff I still pay for that myself. If that’s the case with her, I don’t think it’s a huge deal.

Well that sucks… I was hoping to see us Trini representing! Oh well still have to see if Jamaica gets even a notice seeing that I am living here now and all.
Talk about putting a damper on the event for me :(

I didn’t watch it. But does this mean that Mani will be posting again now that it’s all over, with or without us?

I was very disappointed that Trinidad was not represented. I looked at over 250 pictures and not seeing T & T was a low blow. Hopefully…we can be back next year.

Too bad Trinidad wasn’t there. Usually we’ll watch just to see who is representing us. Better show next time.

Trinidad to dam cheap - MISS T AND T / MISS UNIVERSE IS SUCH A WAY TO BOOST TOURISM - I was in the Miss t and t in 1994….with Kims Sabeeny, she have enough money to run her own show, she too dam cheap not too, now we miss out on 2007 because of Sabeeny to dam cheap to put out a few 1000.00 on a dress and some make-up

Dear Anonymous 5:04, I hate to break it to you, but Kim Sabeeny has been dead for many years now.

To everyone else, although I don’t think it boosted our tourism appreciably, I still liked looking at the show. I look forward to any opportunity to root for T&T.

Chennette, doh worry gyul, ah back.

Hottie, what’s that about flour and water? You lost me.

Kim Sabeeny died? wow 13 years ago when last i saw her? How did she pass away? and I am sorry about that, she was still young and good for sheself 13 years ago…..she died to young….hope you answer back…thanks

Hmm, I’m not exactly sure, but I believe she died before T&T hosted the Miss Universe competition in 1998 and I’m not even sure if she was around when Wendy won the crown in 1998.

That’s very disappointing news! Our ladies are intelligent, well poise and very beautiful. But quite frankly, ever since Kim Sabeeny died, the standard has fallen. The girls are beautiful but not well spoken or very difficult to manage. Ah yes! Trinidad and Tobago suffered a great loss when Kim Sabeeny died! Even in dire situations, Kim Sabeeny always managed to “find funds” or sponsors for the beauty contestants.

MANI THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME KNOW SABEENY DIED, SOMEONE SHOULD TAKE HER POSITION….IF I HAD THE MONEY I WOULD START A NOEW OPEN PAGENANT FOR A MISS T AND T

No, Anon, I didn’t mean to mislead you. Actually, designer Peter Elias is the holder of the franchise nowadays.
