Akon Zen Trinidad Nappy-Headed Hos
Akon
Well, well. If you don’t know the story already, Akon held a concert in Trinidad recently at the Zen nightclub and sometime later, video surfaced showing Akon going ape-shit (I think that’s the scientific term) with a young lady who had responded to his call to wine for a chance to win a trip to Africa. Evidently Akon himself was “Africa” and the display in the video was the young lady’s “prize”. If you haven’t seen the video, I think the best description would be public rape with clothes. Akon can bee seen dry-humping the woman and dragging what you may mistake for her lifeless body all over the stage. The video and the reaction to it are now plastered all over the internet. Google the words “Akon Trinidad” and see for yourself.
Turns out that rumours that the girl ,Deena, is a 14 year old pastor’s daughter is true seeing as the pastor, Dave Alleyne, was interviewed in today’s Express. A 14-year-old pastor’s daughter going to an Akon concert?
![]() |
| Before the Incident (Photo from the TriniScene Website) |
First off, what hope do we have when a pastor will let his 14 year old daughter go to an Akon concert? (Does anyone remember R. Kelly?) That alone is bewildering to me. Honestly, what was he thinking? You’re the pastor of a church, man. Yet he defended his daughter saying that “She likes dancing and won a competition”. He also added that she became a victim in a situation where she had no control. He also said, and I quote from the Express, “They are innocent to the wicked ways of the world and it is our responsibility as elders to keep them safe.” I don’t know what you’d call that barely-there red top, matching heels, low-rider jeans and lower back tattoo, but “innocent” isn’t the word that comes to mind. She’s wearing a crucifix though, so I guess it’s all OK.
Secondly, Akon. There’s not much I can say for Akon except that I’m more than just a little disgusted. I don’t think I have ever seen anything more dehumanizing being passed off as entertainment. To see a big strong man like Akon treat another woman like a hump toy without any regards to her personal safety is appalling to me.
Don ImusDre is reporting that YouTube removed the video from its servers on the basis of “copyright infringement”. Apparently Universal Music notified YouTube of the infringement caused by the 48-second video, yet ignored all the other full-length Akon videos on the site. Sounds like UM is afraid of a little lawsuit.
Interestingly enough, the parent company of Universal Music is NBC Universal which in turn is the parent company of MSNBC who suspended radio show host Don Imus over his “nappy-headed hos” comment before he was fired from CBS radio. Do you see where I’m going with this? Ironically Universal Music has other artists like Eminem, 50 Cent, Dre and the late Tupac Shakur under its corporate belt. I’m wondering whether NBC Universal or even Universal Music will take any action over this. Surely it must be worse to treat a woman like a nappy-headed ho, than to call her one, right? Or maybe it is that women are nappy-headed hos at least some of the time.

Good post Mani. I have to agree with you. I feel so ashamed and dirty looking at these pictures and video. I wonder how that girl feels? And it’s hypocrisy that there’s so much uproar by supposedly God fearing men about Elton John coming for one night to sing, while Akon can effectively rape a girl on stage and nothing is said or done.
By Crankyputz on Apr 20, 2007 | Reply
Akon looked like he was on heat.
But no offence I’ve seen some other soca artists here in TO, and they act just as wild…
And what was the girl doing up there in the first place if she’s 14??
By Karel Mc Intosh on Apr 20, 2007 | Reply
Well Zen said she passed through the cracks. Maybe they thought she passed for 18 and over. But the video is still avaliable. I’ve posted it on my blog; got it from WestIndianTube.com, a Caribbean YouTube-ish site.

I heard that Johnny Soong’s excuse was that Trinis don’t walk with ID. I don’t really see what the problem is here. No ID, no entry. Nice and easy. These people deserve a nice lawsuit. That’s the only way they’ll learn not to let kids in.
By Anonymous on Apr 20, 2007 | Reply
Well Akon disgraced our Trini youth/women and that young woman didn’t sign up for that but when one willingly enters a wining competition, one must expect anything. I feel sorry for her, yet I do not condone her behavior and I have no respect for Akon, he should not be allowed to get away with that madness. Johnny Soong too should be a little more responsible and people should be at least 18 to party. This is a sad state of affairs and everyone involved from the preacher father go down needs to take the blame.
By ttfootball on Apr 20, 2007 | Reply
There are so many valid arguments here, but there is one that I have to question: would this behaviour have been any more acceptable if the girl was 19?
By Karel Mc Intosh on Apr 20, 2007 | Reply
I don’t think age matters in this instance. Both parties had a part to play. She was gullible enough; he was willing to take advantage and reap what he wanted from her. However, regardless of whether she is 14, 19 or 30, he should not disrespect a woman, especially like that.
The uproar about it is serious enough for his label to go on a damage control campaign. Though th reality is that some will still go flocking to buy his CDs etc. In this world, there are all types.
By eemanee on Apr 20, 2007 | Reply
so this is the hottest topic on the Caribbean blogs right now and i think most people have reacted hypocritically.
i’ve seen Elephant Man, Machel, Lil Rick toss women around, flip them upside-down and simulate sex (just what did people think wining or wukking up is?). if that is a disgrace and disrespect to women then it surely didnt begin with Akon.
on the matter of the girl’s age…

Mani, I wish I had known you were writing about this too. I’ll link you to my post when I get out of my office, I like your perspective in tying this to Imus.

Another amazing dose of “if that was my chile” and “is this one fault is that one fault”. Let us use this as an example to our youth especially our young women that they should respect themselves and that inappropriate behaviour is not “we culture”. Also Mani regardless of the situation no woman is ever a nappy headed ho!!

I can’t find words to tell you how nasty this was, just watching the photos. The video is no where to be found as it has been pulled with that copyright notice.
I can’t believe she’s that young in that outfit! Good Lord and navel jewelry too. And the tattoo. I’m not being naive but don’t you need to be 18 to get one or have parent’s consent? I know places will do it regardless as money talks.
I really don’t know. And yes who is responsible? everybody is a little I think. Parents, the child , heck don’t they card you at these events?
It’s just not okay. regardless of a female’s age this kind of thing should not be acceptable. But that’s just me! Very disturbing.

I was with you right up until the very last line.

I have to agree with genie x that the last line of your post is rather disappointing, Mani.
I’m assuming you mean to say that women sometimes play a role in bringing about the bad things that happen to them, which is of course true. But I’m disappointed you went for a flashy, obscurantist way of stating it.
Thankfully, for me it doesn’t take too much away from an otherwise very thoughtful post.
By Mani on Apr 22, 2007 | Reply
Deniece, thanks for your compliments. Apparently she’s now sorry she did it and she’s going to dance for the Lord now.
Crankyputz & Eemanee – you know I was wondering how is act differed from the way other soca artists perform on stage. Even so, it’s not just the raunchiness that got to me, it’s the sheer brutality of it all.
Karel & Ed – I think you may agree with me that Johnny Soong and the Zen staff may be very well aware of the cracks and they aren’t too concerned with filing them.
Anon – I think she has to take a lot of the blame for putting herself in that situation, but Akon disappointed me the most for what he did.
TTfootball – not even if she was 35, after that you really have no right to be at an Akon concert…jk.
Afrobella – Actually I was reading your post on the matter when I got your comment. I’ve linked you up too.
Fed Up – I think I heard her say she was going into hiding till our 7-day memory subsided, lol.
Atasha – Tell me this thing, have you ever seen a 14-year old dressing like that? Whatever the reason is, this girl has issues that probably didn’t begin at the Akon concert. I know women who have never seen the inside of a church who would never go out in public looking like that. Far less for our friend there. I hope she gets the help she needs.
Boysieringo, Genie X, Georgia – I’m sorry that you missed my meaning completely. If you will look again at my last paragraph, I was specifically addressing the double standard of NBC Universal who, through their companies, have fired Don Imus and are seemingly trying to protect Akon. So it’s ok, if you are not with me on the statement. I’m not even with me.
The statement “Or maybe it is that women are nappy-headed hos at least some of the time.” is entirely sarcastic and is me thinking out loud the reasoning behind NBC Universal’s decisions. I was wondering if NBC Universal, by their decisions (and non-decisions as it were) have decided that remarks and actions are OK “depending”. Sufficed to say, I don’t think ever that women are nappy-headed hos. I can see how my statement can be misconstrued, though. Obviously sarcasm is an art I’m yet to master.

Most of you people are sad, you are mad at Akon and for what, because the girl is young. The only person to blame is the parents, Akon is an entertainer, he entertains, get over it. The entertainment industry is filled with individuals who are no morals when compared to others who do, but they still remain on top, why? Society keeps them on top, and if you whiners want to change that, be better parents.

We have a society where people turn a blind eye when an underage girl “dates” an adult male yet are appalled over this? Yes it was disturbing. Yes it was disgusting. But what are we going to do about the fact that we have a society that facilitates such things happening?
By Anonymous on Apr 23, 2007 | Reply
What I find interesting about this whole thing is that I witnessed your home grown Mr. Montano performs the same way for countless carnival seasons with no public outcry. I must there ask why the public outrage now? As for the girls age that is irrelevant, at what age do we take responsibility for our own actions? Why did she get up on stage? I have been to Zen and seen “Dutty wine contest” and to numerous other club here and in other countries and these contest in one or another are always objectify the woman that compete in them. The outrage should not be towards Akon, he just gave us what we have grown accustom to.

What is not seen is the fact that the girl put Akon to lie on the floor first…..Everybody blaming Akon…..Jackass Fitzgerald Hinds calling for a lawsuit…..If they suing Akon, sue Zen, sue the girl and sue the girl father….all of them full of shit!
By Anonymous on Apr 24, 2007 | Reply
As nasty as Akon is, that is how the man performs and entertains. What happened to that girl was sad and unfortunate. What she did was stupid but I wouldn’t call her stupid. She should be forgiven. She is only 14 and has her whole life ahead of her. Pastors’ kids have so many expectations placed on them that they end up under tremendous pressure and the outcome too often is rebellion. You ever heard in Trinidad that pastors’ daughters end up with the worst reputation amongst any of their peers? Plus, too many pastors are consumed with their own lives and ministry that they end up neglecting their own family. I think that Danah must be getting a good beat out at home and that based on their comments in the newspapers, her father and brother are just trying to save face. You think anybody would publicly declare that they are bad parents and that they failed in their responsibility to their children? So blame who you want, but you know what the hard thing for Trinis to face is? IT TOOK A FOREIGN ARTISTE TO COME HERE AND SHOW US HOW NASTY AND DISGUSTING OUR BEHAVIOUR AT CARNIVAL REALLY IS. AND WE CALL CARNIVAL WE CULTURE, ENT? That dance depicts exactly how Trinis behave at Carnival – like animals in heat. And that’s how we promote Carnival to outsiders. It’s the “greatest show on earth, isn’t it? The photos and the video of the Akon “dance” are all over the Internet. Well, Trinidad take promotion now!

THERE ARE TWO WAYS OF LOOKING AT THIS VIDEO MORALLY AND LEGALY:
-WAS HE WRONG IN DANCING WITH HER THAT WAY,YES(MORRALY) LEGALY,THIS WAS DONE OUTSIDE OF THE U.S.
AND LASTLY I GUESS FROM NOW ON EVERYONE IS GOING TO COMPARE EVERYTHING THAT A BLACK MAN SAYS OR DOES TO IMUS’ COMMENTS. HERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE TO THINK ABOUT.
O.K. LETS SAY YOU’RE IN A WORK SPACE,YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD,A SPORTING EVENT, ETC. AND YOU HEAR A COUPLE ARGUING AND REPEATING NASTY AWFUL THINGS TO EACH OTHER, THE”N” “H” AND “B” WORDS. NOW A COUPLE DAYS LATER YOU SEE ONE OF THEM AND YOU REFER TO THEIR PARTNER IN THIS MANNER. THEY GET OFFENDED BECAUSE YOU…..YOU USED THE “N”,”H” OR”B” WORD TO DESCRIBE THEIR PARTNER.
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD YOU PARENTS CALL EACH OTHER NAMES? WOULD YOU REPEAT IT SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU HEARD SOMEONE ELSE SAY IT!!!!!!! NO I DON’T THINK SO.
IMUS WAS WRONG AND SO MANY OTHERS THAT DO THE SAME, BUT IT DOESN’T MEAN IF YOU HEAR SOMEONE ELSE SAY YOU CAN TOO.

Gimme a break.. Trinidad doesn’t have any age limit. People been partying and drinking since they were 14. This is nothing new.
2nd… I guess nobody has been to any other reggae or soca shows. They are just as bad, if not worse. Maybe they will start watchin what they do on TV.
3rd… If this wasn’t taped and put on the net do you think anyone would care? Even the girl would probably be running around and showing off that she was “dry humped” by Akon.

I think Akon should have at least given an apology after realizing the age of the individual. In addition Akon’s label pulling of the content on Youtube was a punk move. just apologize, if Imus can do it anyone can. the video is here: http://www.ttgapers.com/Article1704.html

its nasty and extremely disturbing, shame on u akon, ill never lsitemn to your music again, and i take it off when my kids put it on. u breated that young lady, if it was any of the other young ladies on that stage there i dont think it would have been any different, u r very dehumanising, closed to be caleda rapist with clothes on

her father should not have justified her actions, first punish her by: Telling the public the truth that she is a delinquent then when she actually acts as if she is sorry, then forgive….. but don’t make excuses, that just lets her know that she could get away with anything…..
By Mirissa on Apr 26, 2007 | Reply
I agree that her behaviour was despicable and I disagree with her father’s view that she was innocent and needs to be protected. Yes, she was underage and should not have been allowed into Zen. I have to ask, however, is what Akon did any different from what any of our soca artiste do? Is it any different from what our women do for Carnival on the road? Trinidadians and Tobagonians need to stop being hypocritical and look to home first and see what they can do to correct the crap that goes on her before the look to foreigners. The problem for most people really seems to be that a foreigner did that to one of our own,

Thank you all for your comments!
Genie X and Georgia – thanks for taking the time to point it out to me! I never realized it could be misunderstood.
Hotts – well I guess that’s the question. The display in Zen is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to our social problems especially those involving minors.
Stephan – I agree with you very much.
Mirissa – Well that’s a question that has become the 800lb gorilla in the room. I don’t personally go to see soca perfomances or carnival events, so I don’t know, but since this began I’ve heard many say that is very similar to what soca and dub artist do. So with so many people saying it, it may have some truth behind it. So indeed there may be a level of hipocricy here. Yet it may not just be the raunchiness of the perfomnace, or Danah’s age. I think it has a lot to do with the brutality of it and they way he threw her around with any care for her own safety. That’s the part that got to me.
By Anonymous on May 5, 2007 | Reply
this whole thing seems bizarre… i am sure many soca artistes have done the same (invite women on stage, then preform practically sexual acts!) last year at caribana, i saw a couple dancing and it looked like sex to me ! this girl should not have been in Zen in the first place, she is 14.. so Zen needs to work out their security issues- i agree with the no ID no entry..! rape is a serious issue, and this preformance of akon’s has turned it into just entertainment which is sad… and i agree, her outfit certainly does not scream innocene!
By Anonymous on May 5, 2007 | Reply
Everyone is to blame…the girl (she knows what she is about), her parents, the club ZEN, Akon (shame on you…legal age or not), society, and one ridiculous statement by an opposition party-man trying to imply the government is to blame.
They (the government) may be to blame for most things…but not this! COME-ON!
It is a real shame that as a minor her real name was used. Her identity should have been protected because it is or should be against the law really to have used her name.
Now I understand it was on FOX news that AKON’s contract with some people was terminated. So he will pay the price of his actions. But I think he is the least to blame.
By Anonymous on May 7, 2007 | Reply
if akon did not know her age, you can’t really blame him on that part. As far as the act, listen to what he sings about. It is not surprising that he would do something like that on stage. you can’t go to 2 live crew concert and act surprised when you see sexual situations going on on the stage. IT’S A 2 LIVE CREW CONCERT!!! you know whats going down when you buy the ticket to the show. this isn’t the first time akon did something like this. He did the same kind of thing with tara reid. she’s of age, so nobody really cared. So, the real issue is the girl’s age. If akon didn’t know the girls age, whose fault is it? Is it akon’s fault or the girl’s fault? i leaning toward the girl and the club owner. The reality of the whole situation is she could have been got off of the stage. One of the pictures shows the girl sitting on top of him, and it doesn’t seem like she was being forced. before it got to that point when she was straddling him, she should’ve left it alone. but her attitude was more like,”ugh, i’mma see where this goes.” The only thing i blame akon for is deception. he said it was a contest and it wasn’t. Although, i think, if he didn’t say it was a contest, seven girls would have still went on the stage just to be in the presence of a celebrity. Was the act nasty? YES! was it demeaning towards women. Hell No! it’s only demeaning towards those seven women who went up on stage and demeaned themselves. akon didn’t demean them. they demeaned themselves just like akon demeaned himself. those six women and one girl demeaned themselves to be in the spotlight, and akon demeaned himself to push his album sells up. being black, i don’t think what akon and those women did make me look bad. i think it makes them look bad. how other black people act doesn’t reflect on me as a person. Anybody who looks at rap videos and gangster movies and thinks that’s what black people are, are prejudice morons and can kiss my ass.
- oh, i almost forgot. that imus situation is totally different from this. imus’s comment was racially charged. He called them nappy headed hoes. What akon did wasn’t racial. akon didn’t treat that girl like a nappy headed hoe, and she didn’t act like a nappy headed hoe (her hair was far from nappy). Akon treated her like a hoe, and she acted like a hoe. you don’t have to be black to be a hoe. there’s white hoes, asian hoes, hispanic hoes, indian hoes, alien hoes. there’s all kinds of hoes. You have choices. akon would have performed like that with any race of women. just ask tara reid. so why say,’ i guess treating a girl like a nappy headed hoe and calling her one are two different things.” you were trying to be sarcastic but it wasn’t working. he wasn’t treating her like a nappy headed hoe. he was treating her like a regular ole’ hoe. what does nappy headed have to do with anything. Fuck imus anyway. he calls a bunch of black female COLLEGE students, who play basketball, nappy headed hoes because he doesn’t like the fact they can win games. he’s a bitch. fuck him. excuse my language, but that’s the only way i can address him. i bet he wishes he could put all the black people on a boat to africa.

First of all Akons act is completely unacceptable. There is no reason why any man should be allowed to treat a woman or a girl in that manner.
This little girl had no right being in that club. Whoever took her to that club should in some way feel responsible. She is little girl pretending to an adult, but in no way does that mean that that should have a happened to her. Also how many people were there and not one of them thought that they should stop this ANIMAL from literally raping this child.
Akon is not considered a man. A man knows how to respect a woman no matter her actions or attire. Although she was dressed like a hooker (her “preacher” daddy should have stopped her from coming out of the house like that)a woman is a woman and she should be treated as such.
By Anonymous on May 8, 2007 | Reply
First off, the fact that some people are saying that the girl should have “known what she was getting herself into” by going to this concert makes me really angry. It shouldn’t be EXPECTED that at these types of concerts, girls and women are just supposed to be fine with being treated like sex objects. What Akon did isn’t acceptable at all, to anyone, and it’s sad that our society (or at least some of it) just says “well, too bad for her, that’s what happens at all those concerts, so it’s her fault.” It shouldn’t be at this point where women can be used and thought of as sex objects and fewer and fewer people see a problem with it.
Second, her age shouldn’t matter. Women just shouldn’t be demeaned like that, period. Not if they’re 14, 24, 34, etc. No one should be demeaned like that. And like I just said, they shouldn’t have to expect that they’ll be treated like that just because some people don’t see anything wrong with being an insensitive sexist pig.
It’s true we don’t know what she thought about all of this…I personally haven’t seen a video of what she was like before or after this “performance,” so for all we know she knew what was coming, and was fine with it. Except I doubt that. But even if she was, it’s still not okay because no race or gender should have to grow accustomed to being publicly victimized and demeaned CONSTANTLY (just turn on MTV or a rap or hip-hop radio station).
By chloe on May 8, 2007 | Reply
Well there are certain days when that sort of behaviour is acceptable and they’re Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Secondly, Johnny Soong profits from the so-called cracks in his system.

If you are looking to blame anyone start at home with the girls father!!!!!! She was underage and in a nightclub?!?!?!?!?!? She was dressed like some of the prostitutes I have seen on the BLVD here in MIAMI!!!!!! And like previously mentioned Listen to his lyrics and common sense should allow you to understnad that guess what, THERE MAY BE SOME SEXUAL CONOTATIONS AT A LIVE EVENT!!!!!!!!!!!! Looks like the pastor may need to go over the rights and wrongs again with his poor lil girl. I have seen Live concerts all just the same such as Kieth Sweat, Usher and so on. Akon isnt psychic and couldn’t have had any way of telling she had decided to be wild and sneak in to the show. So lets point in the right direction !!!!!!

ha i just have to laugh i just looked at this video and to be honest the girl is damn wrong to be there she is a little rebel the pastor has no right to defend her she is wrong, as we all know id’s are not checked in trinidad and the girl looks much older than 14.
The club owners are to be blamed as well.
Akon could’nt help himselm trin women r pretty.Girl forgive yoursel and try to behave listen to the good advice of your parents and stpo bringing shame to them they r only trying to guide you.

Girls that dress like prostitutes tend to get treated like prostitutes. If you don’t want that kind of attention from men then put some clothes on!

First of all why and how was she allowed to get into this place where she supposedly had to be 18 for the trip anyways. That should have been verified before they confirmed her as the winner. Secondly her father says she won a trip with him so was he going to let his 14 year old daughter take this so called trip? She was dressed like a grown woman she acted as if the acts that was performed on her weren’t new to her. And she recieved the attention she wanted. How can they think about suing when their daughter was smiling and grinning the whole time a child who is new to this type of stuff wouldnt have been smiling the way she was once the acts started.

it is not akons fault that this little girl was a nasty lil whore she needed to be at home in her bed readin her bible like the angel shes supposed to be. maybe akon went a little overboard but she asked for it. and how can u compare don imus to akon?? don imus is a racist ass old ass man. it was not akons fault u can blme the club u can blame the girl AND her retarded parents but plz leave akon alone
