Written on January 24, 2007 – 12:39 pm | by Mani |

This is the flyer bmob was referring to in my chat box to the right. It’s for the National Shutdown days for Trinidad and Tobago that IBN’s Inshan Ishmael is pushing for to protest thr growing crime situation. The days are January 25th and 26th. I don’t get what this accomplishes. It’s easy enough to stay home sick from work, but it’s like an internet petition — it doesn’t actually show much will or passion. Why not encourage each of these people to write a letter (handwritten is best!) to his or her MP, comdemning the current situation and suggesting an idea for fixing it. Have them copy the Minister of National Security and the Father of the Nation himself. Ask them to write a letter every week. That’s not much, granted, but Manning is more likely to pay attention to tens of thousands of letters a week than people taking a couple of days off (which they were about to on Carnival anyway).

Moreover, encourage people to VOTE. Even MORE important, encourage people to RUN, so that the voters have a decent choice. If we could get even a handful of non PNM/UNC jokers in there, it might frighten the big boys into actually DOING something.

I might start drafting some letters for my boy Colm myself.

Should clarify that I think the guy organizing this IS putting in quite a bit of effort. I just think that there are more effective ways to show force.

I couldn’t agree more. I was actually going to write “I doh know if I missin someting but tell me again how this will help?”

Well if they could motivate alot of people to stay home it’s a start?

A very passive strategy to be sure…but look, they pick up Inshan for “questioning” now.

Maybe after the passive approach people will work on other things.

    Get people motivated?

Anywayz, now I am super pissed off.

What will this do…but what else can we do…For the last couple of years people have protested, marched, petitioned but this government has not moved. What else can we do. I’m not a fan of Mr. Ishmael, but I support this call for a National Shutdown.

What else can our people do? It is getting to the point where our country is in turmoil. A State of Emergency should be declared. But by who, because the PNM surely does not care about our safety.

A state of emergency and curfews.
So what businesses will have to close earlier and schools shorter.

I think to try to cap down on crime, it should be a price we’re willing to pay.

Is the money more important? If everybody gets killed and kidnapped, where will the businesses be then?

Although I like and respect Inshan Ishmael very much I really didn’t see what this National Shutdown was going to accomplish. Like Ed said, it’s just two passive days off from work. What we do need is for people to vote and vote wisely.

A state of emergency isn’t such a bad idea.

Mani what exactly you mean when you say a state of emergency. To me that sounds more like Police/PNM brutality.

Well I meant it in terms of a curfew to keep the bandits and murderers off the street.
