A Conversation with Wayne

Last night I had a good sign that my pledge of watching all 64 games of the FIFA world cup may have some unforeseen implications. For every night of the past week I have had a dream about football. Which is one of the worst dreams I have ever had. I barely remember them, but I think they have all been about Trinidad and Tobago, England, Sweden and Paraguay. All Group B dreams.

In my second-to-last Group B dream I was working the points table to figure out how it would be possible for Trinidad to move on to the next stage. I remember waking up in a cold sweat and what felt like indigestion. In the dream before that, I was restructuring the field positions in order to give Stern John some more help up front. (I know that’s crazy, but it’s true).

Wayne was a good listener

Now last night I had the zaniest dream of them all. I was in a room - I have no idea whether it was in England or Trinidad or Germany for that matter - but I was in this room having a conversation with Wayne Rooney. He was telling me all about his injured foot and how it was to play with it. I asked him if it still hurts him when he plays and he admitted that it did. At that point I began to chide him for rushing back into the game before he was ready. I also told him that he can risk further injury to himself that may hurt his future. He looked down and nodded slowly in agreement while he massaged his calf. He said that yes he knew, but he wanted to play so badly. Anyway we chatted some more after that, I can’t remember what about exactly but it was for quite a while. Then we got up to go.

First of all, why do I care enought to dream about Wayne Rooney? Sure I’m a Man U fan, but that’s hardly important right now. And Wayne Rooney of all people? How random is that? Geez. I would rather have given Stern John some pointers on how to get the ball into the back of the net.

So maybe I better lay off the World Cup a bit. Although if (God forbid) Trinidad gets eliminated tomorrow, I may cease to care altogether. Yeah, right.

Good luck to the Soca Warriors on Tuesday!
